Clad in traditional Tahiti garb, the drummer takes his place behind his instrument. He raises his mallet and begins drumming, but the song he accompanies sounds like no other tune from the island. In fact, it sounds a lot like the Black Eyed Peas. This cultural fusion is just part of the show at the Island Heat LuWow, the Polynesian-themed dinner show at Kahunaville. During the lively 60-minute experience, diners sit down to plates of piña colada chicken and macadamia-crusted mahimahi while performers treat them to song, dance, and spectacle. In addition to tribal drummers, the LuWow also includes tropical renditions of classics like “Over the Rainbow,” and even an appearance by Elvis (or the Elvis-like Tyler Hunter) in his trademark Blue Hawaii garb. Between songs, diners can marvel at the moves of professional island dancers, who swivel their hips to the exact specification of choreographer and performer Gail Davis.
