Dirty Heads
The Band: For over two decades, this beloved act has chiseled a unique, multi-genre infused sound of sunny reggae fused with hip-hop cornerstones and forays into acoustic fare. That flair for the experimental and penchant for darting between extremes has lead to the group’s most confident effort to date…
The New Album: On the self-titled latest, the band comes into their own in what co-founder Jared “Dirty J” Watson calls “the most core Dirty Heads album we’ve done.” He also says, “One of the most important things about this album is the reason we self-titled it. This album has all of the elements that we’ve tried to play around with. We had to go through those other albums to really find out exactly who we are, where it was natural. Now, I just think our sound is better and more confident.”
The New Songs: The record spans lively tracks like reggae-bounced “Oxygen” to the instantly catchy sing-along “Too Cruel” and horn-blasted lead single “That’s All I Need,” the latter of which captures the nostalgia of carefree adolescence.
SOJA
The Band: With breezy and uplifting dancehall tunes that echo the reggae rock of Rebelution and the traditional island sway of Midnite and the Wailers, this Virginia-based band—whose name is an acronym for Soldiers of Jah Army—spreads musical messages of unity, hope, love, and peace and dub.
The Accolades: A nomination for Best Reggae Album at the 57th GRAMMY® Awards, a win at the 2014 Int’l Reggae & World Music Awards “Best Reggae Rock Song / Entertainer,” and a streak of #1 albums on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
The Latest Album: Amid the Noise and Haste, produced by GRAMMY®-nominated Supa Dups and featuring guests such as Michael Franti, Damian Marley, and Collie Buddz
Also Appearing: The Green and RDGLDGRN
